Field sales representatives actually meet with customers in order to market, explain and sell products and services. The field sales representative must determine where potential sales leads are the most likely to be and must compellingly promote these products and services. Sales presentations must be made that are tailored to the needs of the customer. When a sales lead is found, the field sales representative must help the customer purchase the product.
Skills
Field sales representatives usually need at least a high school diploma. Interpersonal skills are needed to effectively build relationships with clients, networking groups and professional organizations. Communication skills help effectively explain both the product and the terms surrounding the product. Field sales representatives are often expected to be creative when determining how to generate new sales leads. Computer skills are also often needed since field sales representatives communicate with many clients through email.
